ASB: Preventative Interventions
Early interventions are considered essential for minimising the harm that anti-social behaviour can cause to individuals and the community.
Problems can be prevented from escalating through early interventions such as early warnings, visits and letters. The aim of any such intervention would be to:
- first and most immediately protect victims, witnesses and the community
- enable the perpetrator to recognise the consequences of their behaviour
- make sure the perpetrator changes their behaviour
ASB can be challenged using a wide range of 'interventions'. Some of those considered most effective are those that directly engage the individual and lead them to change their own behaviour.
The range of interventions include:
- warning letters and interviews
- contracts & agreements (eg Acceptable Behaviour Agreements/Contracts (ABAs/ABCs) and Parenting Contracts)
- fixed penalty notices (FPNs) and penalty notices for disorder (PNDs)
- parenting orders, Individual Support Orders (ISOs), Noise Abatement Notices (NANs)
- injunctions (ASBIs), dispersal powers and Anti-Social Behaviour Orders(ASBOs)
- demoted tenancies, 'crack house' closure orders
- possession proceedings against a tenant.
