Black and Minority Ethnic Groups

Members of Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) groups make up 32% of London's total population, a figure that is projected to grow to 38.5% by 2026*.

Research has shown they suffer disproportionately from the effects of crime, both as victims and in their dealings with the criminal justice system.

In 2003 nearly half (46 per cent) of adults of mixed parentage reported that they had been the victim of a crime in the previous 12 months.

Black people and those with a mixed race background are the least likely group to report an incident to the police according to the British Crime Survey.

Young black males are significantly over represented in the criminal justice system and are more likely to face stiffer sentencing if convicted of an offence.

A wealth of data and research exists, that maps London's diverse and ever changing BME communities. Below we have highlighted some that is particularly relevant to community safety and crime reduction work.

We have also provided links to some of the key BME organisations whose work relates to this field.
