The Alcohol Education and Research Council - Small Grants

The main aims of the council are to increase the capacity of individuals and organisations to deal with alcohol issues and also to develop the evidence base relating to alcohol issues.

Funding up to the value of £5,000 is available to fund small research projects, pilot research studies or demonstration projects with a strong evaluation component. It can also fund projects that increase the capacity of individuals and organisations to deal with alcohol issues.

The following criteria are used to judge all applications:

  • Will the project make a difference to the alcohol evidence base or to the capacity of individuals or organisations?
  • Are the aims well defined and achievable?
  • Is there a sound evaluation component to check whether aims have been achieved?

The Council will give preference to projects that will have a demonstrable impact. There is no deadline and applications will be rapidly processed throughout the year.

An application form and further information can be found on the website at www.aerc.org.uk/grantsSml.htm

Comic Relief

Young people with alcohol problems is one of three priority areas for Comic Relief's Young People Open Programme. It aims to:

  • help young people who have alcohol problems get the help they need;
  • make sure staff have specialist skills;
  • encourage closer relationships between agencies working with young people.

Funding of £5,000 or more is available to:

  • organisations working in partnership (such as a young person's service and a specialist alcohol agency) to recruit a specialist alcohol or young person's worker.
  • work with 'at risk' groups of young people such as young offenders or young carers.
  • training in specialist skills for staff working with young people who have alcohol problems.

The Pilgrim Trust

The Pilgrim Trust allocates around 40% of it's annual grant budget to Social Welfare related issues. One of the key strands of this theme is projects that assist and support people involved in alcohol or drug misuse.

Trustees meet four times a year and have a special interest in the provision of specialist services for:

  • young people,
  • those from black or ethnic minority groups
  • women with multiple needs.

They would look favourably at new models of service provision for these groups.

Grants of £500 to £40,000 are available for capital and revenue funding although the average amount is usually £15,000. Applications can be made at any time during the year and will normally be placed before Trustees at the next quarterly meeting following submission (late January, April, July and October). However, the application and all the necessary supporting information must be received at least eight weeks before the date of that meeting.

Background information on the Trust, grant guidelines and an application form can be downloaded from the website at www.thepilgrimtrust.org.uk/ or request a copy by calling 020 7222 4723, email: georgina.nayler@thepilgrimtrust.org.uk

The Alec Dickson Trust

The Alec Dickson Trust awards funding to people aged under 30 who are able to demonstrate that through volunteering or community action, they can enhance the lives of others, particularly those most marginalised by society, (for example, the homeless, those with drug dependency problems and people with disabilities).

Funding of up to £250 is available and all applications will be considered but innovative projects are particularly encouraged - projects which young people themselves have devised and which are unlikely to be funded by other charitable trusts.
The Trust employs no full-time staff, so only successful applicants will be notified and any enquiries must be made in writing to the Secretary.

To make an enquiry or to request an application form, please write to The Alec Dickson Trust, 172-176 Kings Cross Road, London WC1X 9NJ or email thealecdicksontrust@talk21.com  You can also download an application form from http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/alecdicksontrust/index.htm

Tudor Trust

The Tudor Trust aims to support work which addresses the social, emotional and financial needs of people at the margins of our society. It's focus is on smaller groups, led by people of vision, which are committed to growth, progression and development.

There are no specific funding programmes designed to advance a particular agenda although the Trust has a track record of funding projects aimed at tackling substance misuse.

Funding will be considered for work which is untried, which has uncertain outcomes and which may be difficult to fund. However, it is also understood that there is a place for well-founded, practical work which seeks to bring normality and wellbeing into difficult places and situations.

There is no maximum or minimum grant amount and sustained funding and support will be given if appropriate.

Application is by a two stage process. Only about 1 in 10 make it to the second round at which point a member of Tudor Trust staff will be appointed to work with you to develop your application.

Full guidelines and further information is available on the website at http://www.tudortrust.org.uk/index.html  Tel: 020 7727 8522

Local Network Fund - Being Healthy

The Local Network Fund for Children and Young People supports small voluntary and community groups to improve outcomes and opportunities for children and young people aged 0-19.

The object of the fund is to enable communities, with limited opportunities or access to services that many young people take for granted, to develop projects and activities for children and young people.

Grants are offered between £250 and £7000 and applications are invited under five of themes, linked to the Every Child Matters: Change for Children programme. One of the key themes is:

Being Healthy - Activities that promote a healthy lifestyle so that children and young people are able to enjoy good health, including sports sessions, healthy eating classes and peer support programmes on drug misuse.

The fund encourages projects that allow children and young people to express their opinions and contribute to improving policies and services. It also inisists on the involvement of volunteers in delivering the project.

The Local Network Fund is now a rolling grant with no specific deadlines. Groups are encouraged to submit their application 4 months before the project is due to start.

Detailed guidelines for applicants and an application form can be found on the Every Child Matters website at www.everychildmatters.gov.uk/localnetworkfund/ Alternately, you can request one by calling 0845 113 0161.
