Co-Working on Community Safety II Conference

Challenging Hate Crime in Your Local Community

St Alban's Centre - 5th October 2004

CSAS held a Co-working on Community Safety II conference looking at challenging hate crime in your local community on the 5th October at the St. Albans Centre (Holborn). The conference aims were to:

• Raise the profile of hate crime issues
• Identify solutions to challenge hate crime
• Encourage partnership working on hate crime issues across London.

The conference incorporated facilitated networking, workshops, action planning, panel discussion and presentations from voluntary and statutory sector speakers. Delegates were predominately voluntary sector representatives with a few hand-picked statutory representatives. Workshop topics included:

• Race - What are the hate crime issues and solutions against different black and minority ethnic communities.
• Sexuality - Investigating and addressing hate crime towards lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities.
• Disability - Understanding and finding solutions to resolve hate crime issues for people with disabilities, including mental health, physical and learning difficulties.
• Faith - Discussing and reviewing emerging concerns and prevention of hate crime against different faith communities, religions and beliefs.
• Refugees and asylum seekers - Clarifying the problems and solutions to refugees and asylum seekers as victims of hate crime.
• Socially excluded - Looking at and finding ways to reduce the impact of hate crime on socially excluded individuals and communities.
