Hate Crime

"A hate crime is any crime committed against someone which is motivated by prejudice against their race, religion, gender, sexual orientation or disability".

This can include a range of offences such as:

  • Physical assault
  • Criminal damage to property or a place of residence
  •  Arson
  •  Harassment
  •  Bullying
  •  Threats, verbal abuse and other offensive behaviour

Due to its nature, hate crime is often under-reported and it can be a particular problem in deprived neighbourhoods where a lack of resources can mean people are less tolerant towards difference.

The risk of repeat victimisation is high for hate crime victims. Hate crime can be tackled by a package of measures including increased support, better reporting mechanisms, and educational campaigns.
